Gujarat is one of the most urbanized states in India. As per the provisional statistics of the census 2011, total 2.57 cr.(42.58 % population) persons are living in the Urban areas of Gujarat. The cities in Gujarat are growth engines.
With a view to meeting a vital issue of providing holistic facilities to the urban people in view of fast urbanization, building of beautiful, clean, developmental and vibrant cities and keeping the necessities of all inclusive growth into account, the Government has declared the year of 2005 as the year of urban development and initiated for organized development of the cities.
With a view to helping the deprived poors, a scheme named 'Garib Samruddhi Yojana' was put into implementation in the year 2007. Simultaneously, a special drive in the form of 'Nirmal Gujarat Yojana' to keep the cities of Gujarat clean and eco-friendly was activated.
With a view to meeting the challenges arisen out of accelerated urbanization, the State Government has put the 'Swarnim Jayanti Mukhya Mantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana' amounting to Rs. 7000 cr. from the year 2009-10 with a purpose City Town Planning to meet the necessities of the urban infrastructure.
